The world goes bonkers for banana bread in 2020
The humble banana bread recipe has figured as one of 2020s top internet searches thanks to the coronavirus lockdown restrictions that saw many kept inside last year. The simple ingredients and semi-healthy recipe for this kitchen classic saw it become popular with large numbers of people joining the baking scene thanks to their mandatory stay indoors.
Banana bread initially became popular around the 1930s in the USA, when some of its key ingredients of Baking Powder and Baking Soda started to become more widely available. Prior to the 1930s also the banana fruit had not been easily come by in the states as it is not a native plant there. Throughout the 1800s ship captains had also wrestled with the challenge of how to transport a fruit that rotted so quickly over long distances.
WIth the addition of a little Baking Soda and Powder however, banana bread took America by storm and became a breakfast staple for many. With the advent of the refrigerator at the turn of the 20th century, bananas became a mainstay in the American diet and easily found at the local supermarket.
With the COVID-19 pandemic taking hold throughout 2020 and into 2021, it’s no surprise this simple to make and sweet treat has soared in popularity. Online searches for the month of April 2020 were at an 800 per cent increase from April 2019 – going from just over 300 thousand searchers to over 2.7 million, and that’s in the United States alone!
The loaf shaped cake is known as a bread and uses a mixture of flour, sugar, salt, eggs, baking soda and – of course! – bananas! After combining the flour, salt and baking soda, the sugar and butter should be creamed separately. The eggs and mashed bananas should then be stirred in until the mixture appears well blended. Strips or slices of banana can then be added on top for decoration.
